Rooming With My Best Friend - Decisions - Follow Matt - Choose Your Own Story - 23
Follow Matt
Tears
were streaming down Matt’s face when he ran out of the door, leaving Corey, his
now ex-boyfriend, back in the room. He couldn’t believe what an idiot he had
been and hated himself for screwing up the best thing that had ever happened to
him. It was all his fault and he knew it.
Stopping
in the hallway after the door shut behind him, he tried to steady his breath
but he just couldn’t. His tears were actually dripping off his face they were
flowing so hard and his stomach felt like it was being crushed in a vice. He
felt sick and he needed to get outside for some air.
He
ran as fast as he could down the stairs of his building and out of the front
door, not wanting to be near anyone who would try to talk to him about what had
happened, not wanting anyone to find him until it stopped hurting. His phone
was still in his room so he knew there was no way anyone could contact him
unless they stumbled upon him wherever he ended up, though he didn’t know where
he was going, he just kept running across campus.
After
a while he had to stop running, not only to catch his breath but also to figure
out where he was. He had been running for a good fifteen minutes and had
covered quite a lot of ground. One thing he knew for sure was that he was no
longer on campus and that scared him a little because he had never been out
alone, there was always someone with him.
Turning
around he saw the college buildings quite a way behind him and then looked at
the area he was currently in. He didn’t recognise anything. Focusing on the
building he could see, he headed back toward campus, but he was in no hurry to
get there, slowly walking back as the buildings appeared to grow larger as he
got closer to them.
When
he reached the entrance to the campus he stopped. He still wasn’t ready to head
back to the dorm to face whatever life now lay in front of him, so instead he
turned right and started a slow walk right around the edge of the campus, doing
a full circle, and then he started going around again.
Matt
had no idea as to how long he had been walking, but his feet were beginning to
ache, so about three quarters of the way around his second circuit he came to
an entrance and found himself in familiar territory, over near the soccer
field. With no one around to see him, Matt headed up the small hill toward the
tree he had occasionally sat under with Corey. When he reached it he threw
himself on the ground and sat back against the trunk.
“I’m
such a fucking idiot,” Matt sighed, hitting the ground. “How could I have
fucked up so bad? Everything was going great and now it’s all shot to shit.”
Quickly
realising he was talking to himself, Matt put his head back against the bark
and closed his eyes, thinking about all the good times he had experienced with
Corey. It was hard thinking that the relationship was over, but he had to
accept that he had fucked up. Yes, Corey had cheated on him, but the guy Corey
fucked was just a nobody, someone he didn’t care about, and he could see why
Corey was somewhat paranoid about Matt’s relationship with Kris, even if they
would be nothing more than best friends.
Thinking
more about his relationship with Corey, he thought back to the night when Corey
had called him, crying so hard, wanting Matt to come to him, and he knew then
that he loved Corey because he had driven into the night to get to him and be
with him. That being said, Matt also remembered something his mother had said
in that if they were meant to be then they would come back together, no matter
what happened, and if they didn’t, then they were better off without each
other.
Even
though he was heartbroken and just wanted to go find Corey so they could make
up and get back together, a little part of him was realising that the breakup
could actually be a good thing. Good in the sense that it would give them both
a chance to explore other people, truly, not just for sex, to see if they
really were meant for each other, or if relationships with other people were
something they could enjoy.
There
were so many thoughts running through his head. He was thinking about how he
wanted Corey back, but also about how this time apart could be good for them,
if they ever got back together. In a way he actually wanted Corey to go out and
be with someone else, hoping it would prove to him that Matt was the one for
him and that no one else would do for Corey.
For
some reason that brought a smile to Matt’s face, thinking about Corey lying in
bed with someone after a night of sex and wishing it were Matt in bed with him.
He would soon realise the mistake he made, just like Matt had when he woke up
to see Kris across from him, and they would soon get back together.
Even
if he was deluding himself and telling himself things that strangely made him
feel better, even though he really didn’t want Corey to be with anyone but
himself, Matt actually started to feel less sad about the breakup and was
feeling a little optimistic over what the future may hold.
He
got up from his place beneath the tree and started walking back toward his
building. On the way he started thinking about what could happen if Corey found
someone else and was happy with him. The thought caused a stab of saddened pain
to Matt’s gut, but he wondered if maybe Corey was right. If they had both
strayed in the first place, were things as good as they made out, or were they
just together because it was convenient for them? This time apart would maybe give
them a chance to find that out.
The
walk back to his building gave Matt the time to wipe away the tears and really
collect himself. He wasn’t happy about the breakup but he was content after
telling himself it was only a matter of time before he would end up back in
Corey’s arms and everything would go back to how it was.
The
smile he had on his face soon started to disappear though as he climbed the
stairs to his room, knowing Corey could be there. He had a feeling that if he
saw Corey all his resolve would disintegrate and he would break down, pleading
to be with him again.
Stopping
at the top of the stairs to catch his breath, which had suddenly caught in his
throat, his heart pounding in his chest like it had been earlier when he had
stopped running after his little marathon, he felt fear over what was to come.
After
a few minutes he knew it was no good sitting in the stairwell just hoping Corey
wasn’t in the room. They were still roommates, even if they had switched back
to their old bedroom arrangements, so they would likely see each other every
day unless Corey decided to swap rooms with someone like Scott.
Thinking
of Scott made Matt smile and he knew of all his friends Scott was probably the
one he could talk to about what had happened more than anyone else because
Scott knew what it was like to breakup with someone you have feelings for, and
even not be able to be with the one you may love.
Climbing
up the remaining steps, Matt walked down the hall and stopped in front of
Scott’s room. It was unusual because the door was open slightly and Matt could
hear a voice inside. Wondering what was going on he stepped up to the door and
heard Scott talking to someone, but he could only hear one side of the
conversation. He really wanted to speak with Scott but if he was on the phone
he didn’t want to interrupt. Maybe he should just keep walking.
Matt
wants to talk to Scott but he’s on the phone. What does he do? You decide.
